Hi, If all else fails, the Local Studies Library nearest to where the School was would very likely be able to give you info.

Hi,

A quick Google search on "Dorset Home Industrial School" gives some useful sites.   Failing that you could contact the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester.

bigjon, did you have any success with this? I am currently researching my grandmother's heritage and it stops at the Dorset Industrial Home School for Girls! I have found a few websites listing the headtecher's and matrons etc along with the 1911 census. My grandmother seems to have been there post 1912 and any more info would be useful. I read on another blog that a man's grandmother/ mother was taken by the equivalent of social services away froma prostitution environment before it was too late and put into the place in Poole. Like I say, any info would be really useful, as I don't want to drive to Poole to not find anything.

Thanks

hello bigjon - my grandmother was sent from islington in 1906 to the dorset girls home in west quay road at the age of six.   she was an orphan.   i was advised by the dorset archives at dorchester to try the london borough archives.   i phoned them to see if they had any records about the home and they did.   we paid for a search and was sent a copy of her transfer from islington which had other childrens details on it.    the information on this was worth every penny spent because we found my mother's family after 30 years of searching.   my mother was adopted and never knew that she had six siblings - one of which is still alive and we have met and keep in touch.     the home is still there but it is now offices and called jolliffe house.  i have a photo of children from the home on an outing circa 1916 - i think i got it from the poole archives.   i would really like to know what life was like in these homes but have been unsuccessful so far.  the discharge papers are kept at andover and when funds will allow, i will get them.
