Surnames: Graves / Moythan
« on: Friday 25 June 10 18:16 BST (UK) »
Has anyone ever come across a David Mithan Graves born April 1804 anywhere in London area?

Also Jane Moythan his mother born circa 1770.

David Graves' father was Jeremiah Graves who lived in Portslade, Sussex from 1830's but David was born in London somewhere I think as his parents were married in Marylebone in 1801.

You've got the kids right, he indeed had 3 kids:Sarah Ann 1828, Alfred 1835 & Emily 1837.  David Graves died in 1837 unfortunately by falling off a horse under the influence of gin.  He was a hostler.

His parents were indeed Jeremiah & Jane but without trawling through every parish register in London for David & Jane's baptisms I have no idea where to look next.  You'd think with a name like Moythan it would stick out like a sore thumb.  Jane Graves was buried in Bishopsgate, London in 1829.  Between then & 1837 the family moved to Portslade.

I checked the Marylebone Baptisms from 1802 to 1805 and could not see David there.  Must have been a different Parish or the dates are out a bit... sorry.

Thanks for that. At least I can rule Marylebone out.

You only had to reside in the parish for 3 weeks before having the banns called to be 'of the parish'.

I've had a look at the IGI and a lot of Moythan baptisms occurred in Hereford. No proof that this is where your twig originated but could be somewhere else to consider.

Whilst looking for the baptism of Thomas Graves (born 1803), I found the baptism of his brother, David Moythan Graves.  David Moythan Graves was baptised on 11 May 1806 at St Marys, Islington, London.  David was born on 07 April 1806, son of Jeremiah & Jane Graves.

Hi Iandor

Thanks for that.  Were you searching for yourself regarding Thomas Graves born 1803?  I've been wondering where David Graves was baptised for 20 years but didn't know where to start looking in London.  Did you come across this while researching in London or is it online somewhere?

Hi Dawn

Thanks for that, as yet I have no idea whether there could be a connection between the Herefordshire Moythan's & my one. I look forward to finding out as this is an unsual name.
