Hi Gemma

I think what you need to do is get the birth certificate for Francois. This would give his parents' names and you should then be able to find them on the 1911 census, and then start tracing back from there.

I can't see him on Freebmd - the only one of that name was born much later, so I presume that is his son. Was he born in England?

Mary's registration is:

Mary E Farrer
Sept quarter 1915
Carlisle 10b 1046

The later one is his son!

Im not sure where he was born we were always told my nanas family were from France, the name would fit and i couldnt find him on free BMD either,  but i dont know where to start getting certificates for people born in france??

Oh its so complicated!!

thanks

Given the fact that you were allowed about 6 weeks to register a birth, this could well be Mary-

Births Sep 1915
FARRER    Mary E    (Farrer)    Carlisle    10b   1046

The fact that her mother's maiden name was FARRER suggests that her mother was probably unmarried.  It's possible (but not probable) that her birth certificate would name her father.
Likewise, her marriage certificate could name her father (and his).
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

I think the marriage certificate would be a good start.

gemma, you could try the french based www.geneanet.org
It's free to use for basic searches but you may need to register to get even searches. Don't panic - it's mainly in english and there are forums where you can ask for Francois just like you did here.
