John HAMILTION (tailor) & Margaret SHAW - Glasgow 1856-1895
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 22:37 BST (UK) »
Wondering if someone would be kind enough to check the 1871 census for the following family

John HAMILTON, born circa 1833, died 01/09/1895 Govanhill Poorhouse
occupation tailor
death cert shows him as being a widower of Margaret Shaw

Margaret SHAW, born circa 1833, died unknown
They married on 31/10/1856 at 136 Stirling Road, Glasgow according to the forms of the Congregational Presbyterian Church, the marriage certificate shows they were both resident at 84 Abercromby Street, Glasgow

the only other piece of useful information I have is the Birth Cert of their daughter (my dad's grandmother) which I hope will prove useful cross referencing to the 1871 census

Elizabeth HAMILTON born 04/04/1871 at 69 Bald Street, Parkhead, Glasgow

I'm hoping the census shows other siblings.

Thanks in anticipation
Brian

Hello Brian

I came across a James Hamilton 37 (1834) in an 1871 census.  I realise you are looking for a John Hamilton.
James was b Glasgow, Lanark. Wife - Margaret 36 (1835) Galston, Ayrshire, dtr Sarah 13 (1858 )Glasgow, son William 11 (1860) b Glasgow and son Robt 4 (1867) b Glasgow. Civil Parish: Glasgow Parkhead.  James is a tailor.

I note there is a John Hamilton  47 in 1881 census (a tailor) with wife Margaret 49, son William 22, Robert 13  and dtr Elizabeth 10 at 2 Landressy Street, Glasgow. District of Calton.

Hope this is of assistance to you. Butterlily

both look strong contenders - thanks would be interesting to see if they turn up in 1891 as I'm struggling to see Margaret dropping off the radar before John in 1895 I cannot find her death cert on SP, and couldn't find any ref in Poor Law records at the Mitchell, although with other children mentioned it may be something to go on

Thanks Butterlily - the information you've given at least gives me somewhere to start when I get through to Edinburgh.

Good result on Robert Shaw HAMILTON - by that time my eyes were giving up

Thanks Again

Brian, apart from the James/John issue, the entries that Butterlily has found would look to correspond with the children of John and Margaret. From IGI:

1. SARAH DICK HAMILTON  Birth: 14 APR 1857 Calton, Glasgow
2. WILLIAM HAMILTON Birth: 06 MAR 1859 Calton, Glasgow
3. JOHN HAMILTON  Birth: 28 MAY 1864 High Church, Glasgow
4. ROBERT SHAW HAMILTONBirth: 01 MAR 1868 Calton, Glasgow
5. ELIZABETH HAMILTON Birth: 04 APR 1871 High Church, Glasgow

The family's 1861 census entry in Calton shows father as John from Co. Antrim (rather than Glasgow born as per later censuses).

John Hamilton 26, tailor b. Co. Antrim
Margret Hamilton 25 b. Galston Ayrshire
Sarah Hamilton 4
William Hamilton 2
