Newbie: Need Help Preserving Scrapbook
« on: Thursday 01 July 10 20:19 BST (UK) »
Hello. I'm an amateur researcher and I need some advise on preserving a war scrapbook of sorts.

I have a scrapbook that is falling apart. I wanted to transfer the items to a new acid-free album but some of the letters included in the album are glued to the pages. How can I remove them without damaging the letters? These are letters that great grandpa sent to his family while fighting in WWII.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,
Dorothy

Hi Dorothy

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

I would suggest that you can't remove them without damaging the pages, a professional conservator may be able to give better advice.

Have you tried a forum like this one?

www.ukscrappers.co.uk

It could be a good idea to keep the original scrapbook as it is and maybe scan and reprint the memorabilia/ephemera and use the copies in a new scrap book for posterity, leaving the originals as they are.

Hi Dorothy :)

Please don't attempt removal of the pages that are stuck.  I, like Dawn, suggest you contact a professional conservator to get advice or have the job done for you.

You can find information about locating conservators, as well as other conservation info, at the top of the board I've moved your topic to (FH Documents and Artefacts: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,420.0.html)

I am happy to give more specific advice if you'd like it.

Cheers
