Isherwood
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 18:12 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any ideas concerning the Bolton area origins of Robert Isherwood who married Ann Parry in 1840s? He ended up in Southport. He was from Bolton, but it seems to have beeen one of the very commonest Christain names there for an Isherwood
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Have you posted on the right board for this type of query? I think it should be on the Lancashire lookup requests board

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1843
ISHERWOOD Robert PARRY Ann Liverpool, Our Lady & St. Nicholas & St. Anne Liverpool 2053LP/9/459

Marriages June qtr 1843   Liverpool 20 285

IGI pilot site shows date as 4.6.1843

A copy of the cert will show his fathers name which may narrow down the search

If you have him on any census - what was his birthyear?

He was b 1823 according to the 1851 census so have you already discounted the only possible IGI entries for him?

Thanks CaroleW, I'd got two Robert Isherwoods - or Roberts Isherwood, - and finding it hard to decide which is which, so currently trying to trace both back, and decide if more evidence turns up.

The only certain way is by buying a copy of his marriage cert as suggested above to establish his fathers name

Thanks for that advice re getting the certificate. The issue is: not certain what his father's name was. Bolton seemed to be knee-deep in Robert Isherwoods at that time, I've found loads that "seem to fit", but nothing to guide which one may be which.

And that is the reason you need his marriage cert - it will show his fathers name and occupation on it

The 1841 census only has 4 Robert Isherwoods living in Bolton and only 3 of them were in the birthyear range of your Robert

Thank you for your interest. I was fairly sure that Robert and Jane were the parents, but actually in the Bolton area there are so many Roberts at about the correct generation to be parents of Robert m. Ann, that I have found it hard to get further - there are so many little villages and many family members seem to have moved just a short distance. I appreciate your advice.
