Clayton House Orphan Home 1891 Census
« on: Saturday 10 July 10 01:45 BST (UK) »
Can anyone provide details about Clayton House, an Orphan Home, in Epsom Surrey (East Street).  The home is listed in the 1891 Census, District 10 and has quite a few children living there, one of I am interested in finding further details about.  I have searched the Internet to find details about the home but am struggling to find any information.

this may be of interest -an excellent site
http://epsomandewellhistoryexplorer.org.uk/PoundLaneSchool.html

the Barnado's Boys section has a photograph too

It seems it was a barnados home and was previously named Mittendorf House.

If you put Barnados Homes England into a search engine you should find some info too

Thank you Suz.  Will now be able to start hunting up some information about the home and perhaps seeing if there is access to records of children who were at the orphanage.

Thank you Valda for posting this information.  Will certainly use the information provided and make an enquiry re the person I am trying to find details about.

If the enquiry is successfully, or even if it is not, it is money well spent as I will know that I have investigated this area in trying to find details about this person and if she was at any of the Barnardo's Homes.

Will let you know how things go after making enquiries.

I think it was renamed Clayton House because it was near the junction of East Street and Clayton Road.

Clayton House eventually became the Tax Office (Inland Revenue), but it closed a good few years ago.

Sue langley vale - this is strange, I dont know anything about Clayton house but I note that you have info of the Williams family from Culworth. My Grandfather is Leslie George son of James Williams and have been looking for info for a while now. My Mum was Jean Williams which makes her a cousin of your husband if I am correct.
