You can order one online direct from the GRO (General Register Office) and they now cost £9.25 each inc postage

Here's the link to their website but you will have to register first so click on the "Register/Login" option on the right hand side of the screen

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

When you get round to selecting to buy a marriage cert - it will ask if you have the GRO reference number so make sure you answer yes

March quarter 1859

District = Keynsham

Volume = 5C

Page = 1125

Keep this post open and when you get the cert - post the details from it

I will get a notification from RC so will take it from there

Hi
I have the certificate, and George Lewton's father is named as Ambrose!
Does this help?

Yes it does - look back at the replies I struck through thinking they were the wrong family

If his father was Ambrose on the marriage cert - then that is the correct 1841 entry etc

I have removed the "strikes" so the replies stand as correct

I can't thank you enough for all your help, and all the information you've given me.
I have so many questions, now that many branches of the family have been uncovered.
Do you think it's possible to go any further back, with the information we have?
Can you advise me of any sites I should look at to find out more about how my relatives lived and died?

Ambrose Lewton died before the 1841 census and all that is known is that he was born 1800/1801 but we don't know where

There is nothing on the IGI apart from his marriage so unless you get lucky with any parish records - you may have to put him on the back burner for now

Sarah Dalton/Lewton/Bessell was born about 1801/02 in Sutton Kent

You could buy a copy of the Lewton/Bessell marriage cert which will give her fathers name and occupation

RG10 Piece 2553 Folio 62 Page 22

In 1881 they also had Samuel 6 and Alice 4 both b St George Gloucs

The 1881 is free to view at http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ib/

I seem to be going backwards!
Does this seem odd to you?
I thought this said George was born in Siston, Gloucs, in 1836.
From the new information, it looks as though he was born in 1834 in London?

1841 census shows him as "not born in county"  As they were in the Poorhouse in Gloucs - that means he was not born in Gloucs

1851 census for stepfather Bessell - he is shown as b London Middlesex

1861 census he is married - shown as b Siston Gloucs

In 1841 he was 7yrs old and his mother would have given birthplace details to the enumerator

In 1851 - his mother or stepfather would have given details

In 1861 he was married so either he or his wife gave his birthplace to the enumerator.  As he quite possibly came to Bristol at a very early age - perhaps he thought he was born there

Hi again
I want to find out more about Sarah b 1801/02, Sutton, Kent
I wonder why she moved to Keynsham - do you or anyone else out there have any ideas?
Thanks
