Source Citations
« on: Tuesday 13 July 10 07:40 BST (UK) »
Hi folk,
there's alot of useful webpages about how to cite sources online/offline,
but nonetheless it's a bit confusing. I'm not too worried about online or even family tree software with citation generation, but want to record sources just into a xl o r word format. But what's the best way to cite say a Parish registers whether it be baptisms, marriages & burials, particularly from a cd rom in a pdf book format? I can understand why many folk find this daunting, but I think it's important! Any ideas would be apprecriated.

to cite the cd or file should be relatively straightforward and examples are given here
http://dagda.shef.ac.uk/study/citation.html#elecharvard

n.b. uses the harvard system (others are available)

In the case of individual records in the UK you'd normally use the General Register Office Index Number (the GRO number you see on images from scotland's people for example).  Treat the reference as if you had to order the item officially e.g.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Familyhistoryandresearch/DG_175464

This means that if anyone reading your citation doesn't have access to the resource on which you viewed the item they can still locate the original record if necessary.

In general records should be cited by identifying the organisation that holds the record and their means of referring to the original item.
