Banns vz Licence query please
« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 02:25 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Marriage 29th April, 1848 Kenmare Church, Parish of Kenmare

William Stewart KING, bachelor, full age, police sub constable, father Thomas King, Army Pensioner.

married;

Charlotte IRVINE, 20yrs, spinster, no profession, father Nathaniel IRVINE, Gentleman.

Married in the Church of Kenmare, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Church of England & Ireland by licence by me, John G Day Rector of Kenmare.

Witness for groom Thomas King
Witness for bride William Nicholson

Can someone please advise the difference between Banns and Licence. I always thought Banns were for marriage in church and licence for a Civil Ceremony.

bye

Banns had to be called on three separate Sundays before the marriage.  A licence obviated the need for a wait of three weeks.  However, according to the book by Colin Chapman (Marriage Laws, Rites, Records & Customs), marriage by banns in Ireland before 1870 was "practised by only the humblest in the community"

There is general information about marriage licences (mostly pertaining to England & Wales, but the general principle would appear to be the same) in the RootsChat Reference Library:

Good morning Nell,

Many thanks for clarifying this for me.  I will have a look at the link you gave me.
