1800's Street Map
« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 05:53 BST (UK) »
Could anyone point me in the direction of a good street map from the first half of the 1800's? The address I'm after is 5 Chilton Street, Lower Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey in 1853. I've had no trouble finding Lower Road but Chilton Street apparently doesn't exist! I've tried ChiLLon St and ChiTTon St with no luck.
I'd also like to know where Symons Wharf was located. ( hopefully REALLY close to Chilton ST!)

Thank you for your time
Anne

Symon's wharf is further west, towards London Bridge http://www.oldlondonmaps.com/stanfordpages/southwark01c.html

Thank you so much Shaun. I've had a good look at the maps you sent. I'm thinking that the family I'm researching worked as Merchants ( they were definitely Merchants) at Symons Wharf and lived at Chilton Street. I THINK that is still possible!

Bye

Hi

Chilton Road seems to have been renamed as Chilton Grove sometime between 1929 and 1945.

Put in Chilton Grove and chose Lewisham in Google maps

Thank you Valda. Looking at Shaun's old map, Symons Wharf is near Morgan's Lane which still exists. Google Maps say that Morgan's Lane and Chilton Grove are 2 miles apart. Would 2 miles be a reasonable commute in the first half of the 19th century? I think that this part of Southwark was much more rural back then.

2 miles is a 35/40 minute walk - no distance at all.

Another commuting option would have been a short walk south to North Kent Junction and then a train to London Bridge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_and_Greenwich_Railway
