« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 15:22 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information in the 1851 Nova Scotia census records for Jane Hamilton born abt. 1842 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am attempting to uncover the names of her parents.

The 1851 Nova Scotia is available to search under geographical area here:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/1851/index-e.html
though I see the following comment on the website
'* Not available. Please note parts of the 1851 census did not survive and therefore, no digital images exist'.
Only Halifax & Pictou seem to be there, not Cape Breton.

As far as I know, only the head of family was named; other family members are listed in age & sex groupings.

Much of Halifax County & some others have been transcribed here:

Later: Did she marry in Nova Scotia? If the marriage record is on www.novascotiagenealogy.com
it might show her parents names.

Wow was that poor Jane married to William Cox, widowed & left with 11 children by 1881? I see your dilemma married at 18 Nov. 28th 1860 Sydney Mines (St. Joseph's, North Sydney, Cape Breton )* no parents listed and so will not be with parents on the 1861 either!

In 1881 Jane b. 1842 W with children all irish R.C.: Laura Jane 19,  William Robert 18 (Engineer ),
Richard Augustine 16 ( Engineer ),  Alonza 14, ( birth says Alonzo Douglas)  Rebecca Matilda 12,  Mary Marget  (* birth says Mary maria) 10,
John James 8,  Charles 7,  Frederick Robert (* birth says Robert Frederick) 5,  Michael Montague 3,
Joseph FRANCIS 1 ...some different names here, might hold clues...
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1881/001049-119.01-e.php?id=NS_534883

The name Robert is mentioned twice in children's names...There is a Robert Hamilton b. 1809 with wife Alice in same district 1881. He is a Trader and born Ireland, Roman Catholic...might be worth looking into!
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e325/e008115797.jpg

also an A.G. Hamilton in same district, a collector b. 1836 right next door
(baptism of Charles Francis Hamilton 1865 gives parents Alexander Hamilton & Hariet Mchardy

They are the only Irish Hamilton in Cape Breton, the rest are Scottish heritage

In case they eventually might prove to be the parents  ;D... from the other family in 1881
Alexander Hamilton Married Harriet Mchardy Oct 8 1861 St. Joseph's, North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada
Father Robert Hamilton  Mother Alice Creedon  ( sister Margaret's marriage 1866 (Martin Phiran/Forin on 1881 as Martain PHORAN) says Creadon)
Birth of son Thomas Francis Hamilton in 1850 says Cresdon / marriage of daughter Alice ( Ronald McDonald) in 1864 says Creedon

1861 census is a good find JJ.

Possibly the Jane Cox whose death I found is this one.  :-\ Her birthday [from age on death] would have been 1 Oct 1839. From http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/SurnameList.jsp?surname=Cox&districtId=28&geosort=
in 1901 this Jane Cox dob 1 Oct 1839 is living with husband Michael aged 67 in Sydney Mines with children James 1878 William 1880 & Richard 1884. In 1911 this Jane is widowed. www.novascotiagenealogy.com shows a Jane Kehoe daughter of Lawrence & Caroline married in 1876 [aged 34, widow, RC] to Michael Cox [aged 40, widower] son of Richard & Rebecca.

None of this is relevant to the search for Jane Hamilton of course....however no other Jane Coxes on the 1901 or 1911 in Cape Breton.

Perhaps more children...There was also the birth of a William Robert in 1863 and a Francis in 1874
The Alexander from the 1881 has a child Charles Francis hamilton
The William from the  1861 census ( wife Margaret Mcdonald) has a child Robert Francis Hamilton....
The Robert thought to be parent has a Thomas Francis Hamilton
and here is Ronald (married to sister Alice ..d. 1880) who is already a widower in 1881
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881CN_96956
a lot more children were born to them than are shown on 1881
