Simonstown port records?

Hi,

My great grandfather deserted the Royal Marines Sept 6 1900, posssibly in the port of Simonstown.  According to family lore, he left on a vessel heading "east", maybe to Australia.  Since I have the date he deserted, does anyone know of a source where I could look up what ships cleared port around that time?  If I had the name of some possible ships I could look up the crew agreements and see if I could find him.
