Town of Dukinfield Yorkshire
« on: Saturday 17 July 10 13:02 BST (UK) »
While clearing a house in Ireland recently I found a silver and decorated cementing trowel presented in 19th century in commemoration of the building of a school in Dukinfield. This is in a presentation box along with photographs of the occasion and receipts for trowel and brick. I would like to find a home for these and can supply further information such as dates and names etc.

\hello Crumble2 and welcome to Rootschat.
That sounds a lovely find.
The only Dukinfield I have heard of is this one:
http://www.virtual-tameside.net/dukinfield.html
Records in the past were in Cheshire but it is one of those places that is on the border of the old counties.
If you would like to hand it over to the family of the person you have, then you would have to begins earching for the family. On the other hand, the council may be able to advise you- the school may still be in existence (rebuilt perhaps) but it may be a nice artefact for them.
Good luck
heywood

Thanks for your comments and advice. I had the date wrong it was Saturday May 31st 1913, the trowel  was presented to a Mrs J Ashton by Mr J.A. Percival. The school was PRIMITIVE METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL Foundry Street, Dukinfield. The address was made by the Rev.J. Dickinson and tea was served in the Old Chapel Schoolroom in Town Lane. I have the boxed trowel, programme of events, photographs receipts and newspaper cuttings. Should any relatives or school etc contact me I would be happy to send these items on.

Hi crumble2

http://www.dukinfieldmethodist.org.uk/History.html

link to the modern Dukinfield Methodist church website. I expect that they would be interested to hear about the trowel, so perhaps if you contacted them, they would know if the Ashton family are still involved with the church locally?

Otherwise I'm sure Tameside Archives would be interested in the items  http://www.tameside.gov.uk/archives
