haining famiily
« on: Sunday 18 July 10 17:46 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the family of Agnes Haining who married John Petch and lived in Liverpool 1830s.  I believe she had 2 brothers Robert and James who were born in the Castle Douglas area.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I'll have a look for her as the surname is familiar to me but, before I do, can you clarify the location as Castle Douglas is in Kircudbrightshire - parish is Kelton (on SP as Dumfries but  ::) )

Hi - I think it is Kelton.   Agnes on the 1841 census is not shown as being born in Scotland but Robert and James are and in a later census Robert (I think) put down Kelton as his birth place.   She died as Agnes Petch between 1842 and the 1851 census but no sign of her anywhere.  Any help appreciated.  There is an Agnes Haining but she never married. :)

Hello again

Is she the one  on the 1841 in Toxteth Park, aged 30-34

HO107/567/7/33/2

Her husband was a Tide master and they had James, William and George.

If this is them, she and John are down as 'not born county' rather than S for Scotland.

To help me search a bit more, can you tell me how you know that she had two brothers, please?

OK - I've found the brothers in Toxteth on the 1841, next to the Pethces  and am in the process of following them up. Robert married a Mary from Kirkcudbrightshire.

1841

Sillitoes Builings, Toxteth Park, Lancashire
HO107/567/7/33/2

Haining
James, 20, tidemaster, b. Scotland
Robert, 25, shipwright. b. -do
John Myers, 20, butler, b. Lancashire

Robert is down as b.c. 1814 in  Gelston on later censuses - this is just to the south of Castle Douglas, in Kirkcudbrightshire.

I'll see if I can find some more info on his marriage, etc.

On the 1871 census, Robert and Mary have a niece, Mary Haining,   staying with them, she's 15 and born Scotland.

RG10/4228/28/8

So far I don't see a suitable birth for her - one in Kirkpatrick Durham in 1854  but I'm not convinced of this one.

 :D

I think that I might have found Robert's and James's births/baptisms

Kelton

25 April 1813 Robert s/o Peter Henning and Sarah Herries

13 February 1821 James s/o -do-

There is also a Jane Henning baptised 17th October 1810 to the same parents. I'm wondering if this might be Agnes  :-\

I have checked the full entry for Robert's baptism and it says that Peter Henning and Sarah Herries were of Gelston. Unusually,  Marrion, Jane,  Robert and Maxwell are on the same page

Full list of children to Peter Henning and Sarah Herries, Gelston, Kelton , 1800-1830

21 April 1808   Marrion
17 October 1810  Jane
25 April 1813  Robert
10 June 1815 Maxwell
29 October 1818 Margaret
13 Feb 1821 James
5 Sept 1823 Peter

That is most helpful.   Marion is a family name - John and Agnes had a daughter called Marion as did my great grandfather son of J & A. so it sounds like the same family.   The name does not appear on the petch side of the family.   I am sure that that must be the family.
John Petch etc were tide waiters - customs men who waited for the tide to board vessels to see if there was any contraband.   I had found Robert and his wife in the later census.  He is down as deaf.
Many thanks for all the info.
 :)
