Out of wedlock court case?
« on: Monday 19 July 10 12:29 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
My Grandfather John Eve Luxford (1932) was born out of Wedlock in Plumstead, London.  I have his mother's name Charlotte Jane Luxford (Nee Cross), apparently his Father was John Eves.
I'm finding this very difficult to trace, however I have recently been informed that Charlotte took him to court to claim child maintenance.  My question is... Is there anywhere that I can see the court records?
Many Thanks
Kirsty

Greenwich Council is at www.greenwich.gov.uk/ but it's unlikely that court records would have survived - I would suggest a trip to the Greenwich Heritage Centre who may have local newspapers from the period, or if you can't make it in person, they may undertake to do the search for you (possibly for the payment of a fee).

His birth entry is on Ancestry, so you could send for his birth certificate.
If he is no longer living, I can post the details for you.
I'm not young enough to know everything.

I would suggest contacting the London Metropolitan Archives. I would guess, having a glance at their catalogue, that you might want to look at the records for Magistrate's Court for Woolwich or maybe Greenwich but better to check with the experts for specifics!

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Records_and_archives/Visitor_information/lma_enquiry_team.htm
 - they will be able to tell you, for free, if they hold these records, if so which records to look at, and whether or not the records are open. Given that they're recent enough to possibly contain sensitive information about living persons, there might be some issues over access.

Thank you for your responses, I already have my grandfathers birth certificate but fathers name is blank.
My Grandad did not talk about any of his family and we only found out through my great uncle.

I will definately try your suggestions xx

Incidentally, it would be a good idea to put your location in your Profile so we know which country you're in.  Although Roots Chat is based in the UK, it has members all over the world.  No need to put exact locations - you can just put the country, if you wish  :)
