(John) William WATTS b. c1870 Yorkshire
« on: Monday 19 July 10 22:51 BST (UK) »
•   My great-grandfather.
•    Born c1870 in the Leeds/ Bradford area of Yorkshire.
•   Known as William save for his marriage and death certificates, where the ‘John’ was added.
•    His Father was also called John William WATTS.
•    He married Annie KAVANAGH/ CAVANAGH/ CAVANAH in December 1894 in Salford Lancs.
•   John William spent the remainder of his life living in Salford, eventually dying there in 1922.
•    I understand that his parents/ siblings/ cousins may have remained in Yorkshire and/or on the Yorks/ Lancs border.
Would like to hear from anyone else researching  (John) William Watts or his family.
Did he have any siblings? Who were his parents?

If he was born 1870 - have you checked the 1881 census for him which could answer your query above

The 1881 is free to search at

Apologies in my first post, I should have stated that I have checked the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census for England.  There are are a number of (John) William Watts' which may 'fit the bill'. ;).

I am hoping that someone will have some information which will allow me to identify the correct one.

What occupation was listed for his father on the marriage certificate?
If you have the 1911 census entry, what does it give for his birthplace? - I note that it says 'Paisley Village' in 1901

Hi,

In the 1901 census, my grandfather’s place of birth is given as ‘Yorks Paisley Village’ or if the ‘i’ is actually a letter ‘r’ (see below for the reason for doing this)’- ‘Yorks, Parsley Village’.

In the 1911 census , his place of birth is given as ‘Parsley, Yorks’.

His army enlistment papers state his place of birth as being ‘Bradford Yorkshire’.

I have tried to locate a Paisley, Parsley or even Parslery in the county of Yorkshire in the 1870’s using various online sources.

With regard to his occupation:-

Per his marriage certificate- Labourer
Per 1901 census- Labourer
Per 1911 census- Pipe Fitter.

http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/ narrows that birth down to the sub-district of Calverley. Calverley, as a parish/township seems to be generally listed as Calverley with Farsley

Could Farsley=Parsley=Paisley ?!

I wondered about the John W WATT on this page in 1871:
piece 4601 folio 87 page 7
born in Farsley but living in Wakefield.
He's 7 months old  which fits the above birth but his father William is a stone mason.
