Rose Martha WALLIS lost after 1927
« on: Tuesday 20 July 10 01:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping some one may be able to help me find what happened to this lady after she arrived in Sydney.

The details I have are that Rose Martha Wallis left her husband Fred & took her adopted son Walter Stanley to Australia. I have a record of them sailing on the SS Balranald that left London on the 9th June 1927. I did find the log for this sailing on the NAA & she was recorded as disembarking in Sydney.

Family story was that she met & married a rich sheep farmer on board but I don't think this can be true as there is no mention of her marriage in the log. :-\  Appart from that I haven't been able to find any divorce records in UK for her before sailing so I wonder if she would have been able to get a divorce whilst living in Australia to enable her to marry again.

Unfortunately her close family never spoke to her again & no one in the later generations knows what happened to her or Walter & if there are any family still in Australia.

Any help or advice will be gratefully received.

Many thanks
Maddie

Thank you for that quick reply Annie, I was just about to go to bed. :)

Yes, I do have her parents names & apologies for not putting them on my post.

They were Walter William Morgan Brown & Anne Maria Wade. Rose was Rose Martha Brown born 20th Sept 1895, Stoke Newington.

That marriage you have found looks very interesting. :)

Many thanks again.

There is no Sydney Arthur HUNT listed as a passenger on the BALRANALD.

I note that Rose Martha's occupation was cook on the passenger list.  Would there have been enough time between her arrival at the end of July and marriage also in 1927 to obtain a divorce?

You can purchase a transcription of the marriage posted above, which will give you amongst other information, the names of the parents of both the bride and groom.

Electoral roll information for the couple who married in 1927.

Australian Electoral Roll
1930
HUNT Rose Martha  Maitland Street, Bingara  Home duties
The remaining HUNT enrolments are illegible.

1936
HUNT Rose Martha  Pallall, Bingara  HD
HUNT Sydney Arthur  Pallall, Bingara  Labourer

1943, 1949
HUNT Rose Martha  20 Carey Street, Manly  HD
HUNT Sydney Arthur  20 Carey Street, Manly  Upholsterer

1954 as above but Sydney is now a cabinet maker.

Family stories are a good source of information but unfortunately are often inaccurate ;)

Hi All,

Agree with Cando

Also re 1930 and illegible entries,  noting that alphabetically Sydney would be listed near to Rose but after her, hence the illegible entry that immediately follows Rose is for someone whose occupation was upholsterer and with a middle name commencing with "A" and residing in a "street" in Bingara, with the street name commencing with "Ma".   Although that entry may be for Sydney Alfred, it and several following it are most certainly illegible.   It is not a long step from upholsterer to cabinet maker  ;)  several of my NSW forebears were upholsterers on the pre WW2 rolls, yet in much later rolls were cabinet makers.

Do you a year for the birth of  Rose's adopted son ?  I note he may still be living.

Cheers,  JM

I think we have found the right marriage and electoral roll information.  Confirmed by the son's NOK on his WW2 service summary.

Oh my ;D, I am amazed, you do seem to have found Rose M, thank you so much.

I do appreciate that Walter may still be alive, as is his cousin in UK at the grand age of 82 & will be so pleased that we have a lead on his missing Aunt & family.

Cando,

Many thanks for the Electoral roll info & NSW links for the marriage, as you say, I'm not sure about the time between her reaching Sydney & marrying again would have been enough for a divorce, I guess it's possible that she did get one before leaving UK & it just isn't listed on the NA site. or not. ;D

The age for Walter on his WW2 service record seems to fit although no one knows his actual birth date, just his age from the Balranald manifest but Walthamstow is spot on.

From what you have all discovered we can now do more research & maybe find family.

I am very grateful & a big thanks to all of you, if any one should spot anything else that may help I would love to hear about it. ;D

Regards
