"The Great Escape" Stalag Luft Survivors
« on: Wednesday 21 July 10 21:20 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information about the WW2 POW survivors of the Great Escape, specifically if any returned to live in Kent outside Canterbury.

I have been told from a local resident that a one legged survivior lived in my house after the war, this came to light when I was researching the history of my house.
Miller, Boardman, Rothwell, Kershaw, Stringer, Longstaff.
Rossendale Lancashire, Cheshire, Walsingham, Norfolk.
Rothwell Toronto Canada
Richard Henry Rothwell East Lancs Reg WW1
Ernest Brereton Kershaw Japanese POW WW2

Have you thought about putting a letter in local paper?

The list of victims and survivors is on this site.

it might be possible to search the local records/newspapers etc for any of the latter names

Thanks for the tips and references to look up.

I now realise that I also have the "Wooden Horse" escape to look at.

Easier as there were only three escapees.

This Forum will give their names and the query which prompted it.

The Stolen Journey is the best, but at the time I remember Eric Williams being the most popular author

Might also be worth contacting the Imperial War Museum as they are a mine of information...

You might also like to look Oliver Clutton Brocks book Footprints on the Sands of Time for information. It has a whole chapter on that particular POW camp :)
