Hi Aileen

All the Gorton baptisms are included above.

There are 15 Gorton marriages including those above.

There are 22 Gorton/Gordon burials.

If you would like any of these please let me know or send me a PM.

However, in the Churchyard Survey we did between 2002 and 2009 we did not find any Gorton headstones.

The only date relevant marriage for TILLING/TILLIN/TELLING is:

27 Apr 1766 Richard CRIPPS, Woolston and Mary TILLING, Ashbury, Berks

Kind regards and I hope some of this may be useful.

The Uffington Registers include Woolstone entries until 1849.

Aileen

I forgot to say that the absence of headstones at Uffington doesn't preclude the fact that up until 1849 the entries in the Uffington registers would include burials at Woolstone Churchyard.

If you would like a photo of either Woolstone or Uffington Church please PM me with your email address and I will email to you.

Aileen

I just found this topic in Rootschat and have copied one of the entries below.  This seems too good to be coincidental

Dear John

will go back to familysearch in a while to chase up the details that I earlier referred to, but want to show you an amazing coincidence .......

I have just been browsing in the Wantage marriage records for the early 1700s looking for a completely unrelated family, and have found the following!

1757 17th October, marriage of John Jilling, single man of Wantage, and Sarah Weaving, of Goosey, Stanford, witnesses Francis Fortescue and John Noke.

 KN

I note that there is a cluster of Fortescue baptisms & burials in Wantage from the 1780s onwards but no Francis.  You may well know about these already.

Does this date match your request for details on Martha Tillings parents John Tilling and Sarah Weaving?

Hi there Cello,
This is more than just a coincidence, I think this could be the family of Martha as their first child Elizabeth was born around 1760 that I know of and John came from Wantage.
Thank you so much for that it's a really great find.
 Cheers......... Aileen :D

Hi Aileen

Great,  You may now need to go to Wantage registers for more info. No doubt another Rootschatter will have access to the Wantage registers, but if not I can go to Wantage library where they have some of the BMD registers.

Was any of the other information in my previous posts useful?

Hi Cello,
 All the information  you have found has been very useful.  You have been very  helpful indeed  and I really appreciate it............As I don't have full time access to a computer it just takes me a while to reply so please don't think I am being slack if I don't get back to you straight away. I'll give the Wantage records ago. and if I can't get into them I'll let you know..............Many many thanks Aileen. :D

Hi!
I'm hoping I'm doing this right, as I'm totally new here.
I don't have any information to add, but I am also looking up the history William Gorton and Martha Telling and would love to collab or cross examine information.
Thanks :)
Elly

Hi... this is my first post on this site.
William and Martha GORTON are my 3rd Grt Grandparents.
I am in Australia and descend from their son 'Joseph', one of only 2 of their 4 sons that survived to what evolved into the ENORMOUS Gorton Dynasty in Australia.
Joseph and his siblings were all orphaned when William and Martha died the same year - 1821.
IS IT KNOW IF THERE A SICKNESS AT THAT TIME ?
As I understand it the 'caretaker' of the estate of Lord Barrington, where the Gortons were tenants and lived & farmed, took the boys under his wing, and later had them indentured with him to the Australian Ag Co them all being good stockmen. Thats how they came to Australia.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFORMATION OF THE 3 SISTERS, that were left behind in UK, being ;
* Elizabeth b.1810
* Sophia b.1816 (perhaps married William ALDER ?)
* Charlotte b.1818
These girls names show up in the Australian Gorton line, which would mean the girls were not forgotten by the boys when they came to Australia...  but I have no idea if there was any further contact between the male and female siblings.
with thanks :)

Hi Elly - are you interested in the history prior to William and Martha...  or of their family lineage from their 7 children ?
