My Uncle went to South Africa to work in the diamonds not sure when he left Liverpool he got divorce and in them days it was shame ,so he left and went to South Africa i am trying to find out if he had any family out there and when he died,but so far come up with nothing his name was.Joseph Rathbone Mellor thank you for any help you can give

Can you give us an approximate date of birth and was he born Liverpool?

He was born  30th may 1894 ,63 Biancia street  Bootle Liverpool,his parents were Samuel Mellor and Ada Mary Mellor,and  on  14th july 1915 he married Jane Latham,he was 21trys old she was 17 does this help any

On Ancestry24 there is a record for a John Michael Russell Mellor, son of Major J.R. Mellor, in the St Andrews College collection. (a boarding school  in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa) Possibly your Joseph Rathbone?

Have found a thread on a genealogy forum site for South Africa asking questions about Joseph Rathbone Mellor.

I think this is you,  "Dutch"?  Anyway, another piece of useful information is that it is thought that J R Mellor left Liverpool during 1930?

Is this correct for your Uncle please as it helps?

                         yes that it is me but i dont no when my uncle left Liverpool,I only no what my mum told me that he had gone to work in the diamond mines,and thank you for replying sorry i cant be of more help but would realy like to find out if he remarried over there ,cant ask any of the family as there all long gone

Sure, thanks, I thought it was you.......at first though I was hoping to open it up and find all the answers for you!

Anyway,  it is better that your uncle didn't definitely leave Liverpool in 1930, as earlier on, I found a ship's passenger, and then because of the date of 1930, thought it was not your uncle.

Now, maybe, it could be:

      Several other J Mellor's, Male, who left the United Kingdom from Southampton, England, for Cape, South Africa. 

Have you any idea at all, how long after the marriage, they were divorced?

And, how long after that, that J R Mellor may have departed the UK, for SA?
