First World War Deaths
« on: Friday 23 July 10 20:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,
If My Great Great Grandfather Was Serving in the 2nd Battalion South Staffs Regiment and died on the 10 March 1915. Is it possible to derive a rough guess on what battle he died in?

Also What do the Regimental Numbers mean? his number was 6090.
Regards,
Joel Fraser

You would need to get the Unit War Diary for 2nd Batt from the NA at Kew to see exactly what they were up to.It maybe available to download online.

Each soldier had a Regimental Number 6090 was his.

i cannot see his Medal Index Card on Ancestry although it is on the NA site to download for £2

First off what cemetery was he buried in (check on CWGC if you haven't already)? Will provide a geographical clue.

2nd South Staffs were part of 6th Brigade, 2nd Division.
In March 1915, 2nd Division were on the Western Front, battle escapes me for the moment.
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

I don't think he is buried anywhere, he is listed as killed in action on the Le Touret Memorial.
