LEARY family of Redruth Cornwall
« on: Tuesday 27 July 10 02:24 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm from Australia and my wife has family history back to Michael and Catherine Leary of Redruth Cornwall through their Honora daughter who married Cornelius Driscol in 1854 then migrated to NSW in 1858.

I have the 1861 census details but I'm trying to find more on the Leary family who migrated from Ireland probably in the mid 1850s to Cornwall.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Regards

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

They were in England by 1851!
Youngest Son must have been born just before they arrived.

1851 Census
St Agnes, Cornwall
HO107/1909/621/11

Michael LEARY, 40, Farm Lab
Catherine, 40
Anna, 18
Timsey (Timothy), 16, Lab
John, 14, Lab
Michael, 11, Lab
William, 7
Alfred, 7mths
All born Ireland

1861 census has a Daniel born c 1855, Cornwall, but I cant find a Birth Reg for him ???
If we could it would provide his Mothers maiden name.

Also in 1861 we have
Mich, 60
Cath, 50
Timothy, 24
John, 21
All born Ireland
+
Patrick, 15
Michael, 10
Humpr, 10
All born Ireland
Doesnt look right to me as where were they in 1851?
+ Daniel, 6, born 1855, Redruth

Timothy Leary appears to have married Dec 1861, Redruth to Johanna DRISCAL;
In 1871 he is in Wales
RG10/5445/58/50
Timothy Leary , 30, Head, Mar, born Ireland
Johannah Leary, 31, Wife, Mar, born Ireland
Ellen Leary, 9, Daug, born Cornwall
Mary Leary, 7, Daug, born Cornwall
Catherine Leary , 5, Daug, born Cornwall
Johannah Leary, 2, Daug, born Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales

Are you sure Gerry that Honora and Cornelius Driscol emigrated in 1858?
Did they have;
Timothy, Margaret and Lissey as Children?

Thanks Trish for the response,

Your correct Trish it was 1856 not 1858.

The information that I have is that Cornelius Driscoll 28 his wife Honora 26 and child Johanna 1 sailed from Plymouth on 23rd December 1856 on the vessel Fitzames arriving at Sydney on 1st April 1857.

The records show that Cornelius and Honora were born in Ireland and that Honora's father, Michael was living in Cornwall, also Johanna was born in Cranborne Cornwall (probably should be Camborne)

Regards

Gerry

Trish,

Maybe I jumped the gun with the census details.

I found a marriage in the freeBDM site for the Registration District of Redruth Sept 1854 Volume 5C Page 469 where a Cornelius DRISCOL married a Honora LEARY, I think this is good.

I found an old family history record that said " Honora d of Michael O'Leary, farmer and Catherine O'Driscoll born Co Cork"

The ship's record said Honora's father was Michael and mother ??? living in Cornwall.

I assumed that the 1861 census records that follows was for Michl Leary and Honora's family because there was a Michael & Catherine.

Piece RG9/1584
Place Redruth-Cornwall
ED: 11
Civil Parish: Camborne
E/Parish All Saints
Folio: 90
Page: 33
Schedule: 163
Address: Cairn Entral

But I'm not100% sure

I think that the Leary family including Honora immigrated from Ireland after 1851 and before 1854.

Regards

Gerry

I think you have the right Family in 1861 Census. It just that I found a 1861 census for a Cornelius and Honora also ???

Back tomorrow to try and sort this out.

Trish :)

The IGI at Familysearch has a Marriage of Michael LEARY to Catherine DRISCOLL, 16 February 1836, Roman Catholic, Inchigeelah Parish, Cork, Ireland.

Now if this is who we are looking for;
Honora would have been born before this as she was born c 1830 as she was 26 in 1856.

Do you have Honoras Death Cert? Is it 1904 NSW? And Cornelius 1911 NSW?

Trish :)

Trish,

Thanks very much for your research.

The 1861 census information looks good, not sure about the 1851 census though, maybe they were still in Ireland!

The marriage information that you have found could have been Honora's parents, the names are ok and the date is close.

The information that I got off an index card from the Maclean Historical Society was that Honora was born at Gauleon county cork daughter of Michael O'Leary farmer and Catherine O'Driscoll

Driscoll = Driscol = O'Driscoll

Leary = O'Leary

I haven't got any death certificates but.

Off the index card as well I got.

Honora died at Maclean 5th June 1904 aged 72.

Cornelius died at Tullymorgan near Maclean 27th October 1905 aged 78.

The index card also had Honora marrying Cornelius around 1855 in Cornwall, now I believe that I may have found the marriage of Honora and Cornelius in Cornwall on free BDM for Sept 1854 District Redruth, volume 5C page 469.

Interesting is that on the same voyage were

Michael Driscoll 45 Husband born Cork
Anne Driscoll 43 wife born Cork
Anne Driscoll 10 D born Cork
Michael Driscoll 8 S born Cork
Jane Driscoll 4 D born Cornwall
Timothy 2 S born Cornwall
Infant ( Bridget) born on board

I thought that Michael might have been Cornelius's brother but I haven't looked at depth into their ships records particulars as yet.

Regards

Gerry
