George Farr 1st marriage
« on: Tuesday 27 July 10 09:41 BST (UK) »
Searching for the first marriage of George Farr born abt 1806 in either Stockton or Hartlepool (place changes with the census) His 2nd marriage took place in 1859 to Jane Stewart at which time he is recorded as a widow and a shipwright.

The only possible one I can find at the moment is a girl named Ann born around 1802 living in the Stockton and Sedgefield district in 1841. Their surname is entered as Fair so may even be the wrong person, so any help appreciated.

Hi Lottee,
MMmm 1851 Census George is already living with Jane Stewart and down as Unmarried and a Seaman.
Charlotte aged 2 is down as Farr and Janes Daughter.
Charlotte is down as being born 1 June 1850 and not Christened til 02 November 1860, Tynemouth, Northumberland. Parents GEORGE and JANE (Source IGI)
On 2 out of 3 census 1851/1871 he is born Hartlepool and the 1851 has a line thru where it says Yorkshire. It is possible it should have been Stockton, Durham.
He does exaggerate his Occp on Marriage Cert so maybe also his Marital Status also?

I cant find anything conclusive in 1841.

Hi Michael,
1861 Census RG9/3836/35/63 has him born Stockton, Yorskhire
1851 Census HO107/2409/541/66 as Hartlepool, Durham
1871 he is the Tynemouth Union Workshouse, born Hartlepoolc 1806.

Possible 1841 with Ann is HO107/1259/6/Thornaby

Trish :)

 Thanks for that, Trish.

The River Tees was the dividing line between the counties of Durham and Yorkshire. Stockton on the Durham bank, Thornaby on Yorkshire bank.

 On the 1841 census (page ref  1259/6 6-4 ) George and Ann are both annotated as not born in the county ie Yorkshire. ( Incidentally the enumerator in the Enumeration District Description - No17- notes that this part of Thornaby is known as South Stockton- South Stockton and Thornaby merge in 1892 as Thornaby)

~~~~~~~~------------
When Registration Districts started in 1837 Stockton held sway over Hartlepool until 1859 when Hartlepool became Reg District in own right.
Stockton RD also included Middlesbrough and Thornaby until 1875 when Middlesbrough RD was formed, including Thornaby.
Other than that Stockton and Hartlepool were easily separate, so confusion over the two should not have been an issue. The parishes of Stockton and Stranton( which included Hartlepool) were not even neighbours.
I do not know what the above means other than a headache for me !
But I do think the Fair couple are good candidates for Mr and Mrs Farr.
St Hildas South Shields,
page 36 of the Bishops transcripts,
Sarah Jane Far daughter of George and Ann baptised 17th Feb 1841
born January 20 th,
so if you can find her birth registration you can order her birth certificate and then you will know who her mother is,
Thank you both for your replies and comments.  I have George and Jane's marriage cert and he records himself "of this parish" but clearly he wasn't.
Thanks for the explanation regarding boundry lines, I wonder why he changed his mind at each census?
Being a conspiracy theorist, at one stage I did wonder whether the reason for the delay in Jane and George's marriage was because he was still married to Ann when Charlotte was born because they did leave it a very long time before they christened Charlotte. But just shot that theory down as I have found a death entry for Ann Fair, Stockton in 1845!
Lottee,
"of this Parish" just indicates he was living in that parish territory when he was married.
" Native of this Parish" would indicate that he was born in that particular parish.
