« on: Monday 24 May 04 09:08 BST (UK) »
Cant quite read an address from a marriage certificate in Glasgow... Is there a Van street or something similar. I have a usual residence as 11 (Van?) street Camlachie in the Burgh of Glasgow in 1905...If Van can someone also give me an insight into where and what Van street was like in 1905,ie poor, middleclass etc, central, anything.

Thank you...ele

Stuck on another address???

16 South St Mungo Street Glasgow.
Thats what is on a birth certificate? same on a 1881 census.
can someone explain the St and Street, is it Saint Mungo Street? Thanks ele

Thank you...ele.

There is still a Van St in the area that you mentioned but all or most of the tenements that were there have now been demolished.  It was a very poor area of Glasgow and the housing conditions that people had to live in were appalling

If your relatives were Catholics then there is a good chance that they may have been buried in St Peter's cemetery which is quite near Van St.  If you find an exact date of death for any of your relatives then you can contact the Archdiocese in Glasgowwho will give you the information that you need to trace the lair.

Please feel free to e=mail me if I can be of more help to you

Thank you for your reply, thats great.

I do have another address if you dont mind. 48 Soho St Camlachie. After Van they moved to Soho St where my Grandad was born, he also talked about " Gallowgate ".He said they came  from Gallowgate Glasgow, so i presume he means Gallowgate rd/st near the Glasgow Greens?? Is Van and Soho st far? Where abouts is Camlachie, central?

Thank you also for the cemetery, yes they were Catholics.Do i need exact date or will the year do?

Thanks for your time...ele

As no one has chipped in ...

You are quite right in presuming that the St with Mungo is for Saint Mungo who is the patron saint of Glasgow.

Gallowgate (there is no road or street added on) is a long road which runs from the High Street in Glasgow eastwards.

Glasgow Green is a large park area which was once common land for the people of Glasgow ..... The Gallowgate does run near it and is only a few minutes walk.

Hi Ele

Glasgow green is central to the older part of Glasgow and the district of Camlachie is East of there about 10-15 minutes walk. Both are north of the river Clyde. I couldn't see Soho Street on a modern map but great areas of the old tenements have been knocked down and new housing or shopping malls built in their place. The Gallowgate ends at Camlachie.
The district lies right behind Glasgow Celtic Football ground.
