Ynysweudwy vs Ystradgynlais
« on: Wednesday 28 July 10 00:27 BST (UK) »
My grandmother Rachel Jenkins Mortimer said she was born in Ynysweudwy 20 April 1852.

I found a possible match for Rachel Jenkins in the 1871 census, only it  reports her birthpace as Ystradgynlais.

Could Ynysweudwy and Ystradgynlais be "the same" location?  Or do I not have a match?

Do you have a copy of her marriage cert showing her fathers name and occupation as that could help narrow the search

Was Mortimer her maiden or her married surname

Marriage certificate of Rachel Jenkins to Thomas Mortimer on 9 Feb 1873 reports Rachel's father's name as David Jenkins, coal miner.  She is living in Glynneath.  Oral family history said his name was William, and that he was deceased by the time Rachel Jenkins was six.  And that his cause of death was silicosis

I have a copy of the 1861 census for a Rachel Jenkins born in Ystradgynlais, Breconshire.  Is this the one you are talking about?

They are not the same place, as far as I know. Ynysmeudw is near Pontardawe, Swansea. Ystradgynlais is quite a way off that.
