Parish Registers Penrith
« on: Wednesday 28 July 10 04:26 BST (UK) »
I'm thinking about ordering a microfilm from the LDS Family Search organization in Salt Lake City.  Can anyone tell me what information I might find on the record of a marriage about 1825 at St. Andrew's Church, Penrith?  Would it only be the names of the bride and groom, the minister and witnesses? I'm hoping for the father's names - any chance?

Thanks,
Seattle

Hi
It was not a requirement to give fathers' names at that time but you might find them as witnesses.  Getting the film is a good idea though as when you look through you will also find other family members and odd snippets of extra information such as occupations and addresses.  The burials are useful too as they give a much better picture of the whole family.

Andrea

Hi,

Thanks, Andrea.  I've ordered the Bishops Transcripts for several parishes in Wales, which were very helpful.  My Welsh families stayed put for many generations, but the Shields family I'm looking for in Penrith, moved on the Lancashire by 1838.

Unfortunately, Hugh Shields was born in America in 1782 and his wife Ann O'neil was born in Ireland!  I'm not even sure they married in Cumberland, but their first child, Elizabeth was born in Penrith about 1825.  I've really hit that brick wall, so thought it might be worth looking at the church records for a possible marriage or birth.

Again, many thanks,
Sharon

Thanks, Geoff

I tried them all, but no luck.  Penrith must have been larger than I thought, to have that many churches!

Cheers,
Sharon

The only C of E one at that time (1825) was St Andrew's as far as I know.  There were a sprinkling of non conformist churches too plus Christ Church from 1850.  Penrith is very much a market town.  Not enormous even now but serving a large number of villages.
