A possibility that might lead to a mine of information, was he a descendant of Charles Babbage, the father of modern computing who invented the "difference engine" c1822

Hi

'In 1827, at the age of 35, Babbage's wife, Georgiana, died, leaving him with three surviving children, Benjamin Herschel, Henry Prevost, and Georgiana.  Babbage never remarried.'

http://www.blackwood.org/Bab3.htm

Benjamin Herschel Babbage went to South Australia. Henry Provost Babbage was a Lieutenant Colonel in the army in 1871. His two daughters who were with him on the 1881 census were born circa 1858 and 1861 both in India.

William Babbage aged 41 on the 1901 census and born Kensington was in Croydon on the 1901 census. His occupation was a land surveyor and in 1891 he was a sergeant in the Royal Engineers.

Just association of ideas, could William Babbage be the son of Henry Provost Babbage, and hence the grandson of Charles Babbage?

Hi

The Babbage family were a wealthy and prominent one. Lieutenant Colonel's in the army don't have sons who were sergeants. In the C19th officers were gentlemen.
