St Martins, Jersey-SHERLOCK (Burial Lookup)
« on: Thursday 29 July 10 11:32 BST (UK) »
Hello.  My 3 x Great Granfather, William Sherlock b.abt 1819 Brighlingsea Essex, lived on Jersey with his family.  He was a seaman.  Last place I have him is on the 1901 census in the parish of ST MARTINS, Vingtaine De Foldouet, Jersey.  Hes not on the 1911 census so I assume he died sometime between 1901-1911.  Is anyone able to look for a death/burial record?  His wife, Jane b.abt 1823 Southampton, was in the Jersey Lunatic Asylum on the 1871 census in the parish of St Saviour, Jersey. She doesn't appear on the 1881 census.  Would very much like to know when she died/where she is buried also.  I'm also looking for the baptism of their son WIlliam SHerlock b.abt 1844 in Grouville, Jersey.

Is anyone able to help?

Kind Regards
Erica

Hi Erica

There is a death in St Martin for a William Sherlock, Apr 1904 to Jun 1921 on page 69.

There is a death for a Jane Shirlock (slightly different spelling) in St Saviour, Jan 1872 to Jan 1880 on page 58.

Finally there is a birth for an Albert William Sherlock in Grouville, 21st Aug 1842 to 9th Feb 1849 on page 16.

As for graves, there are no central records for burials. There are only 3 listings for the main cemeteries in St Heller and they don't appear in those lists. Chances are they are in the Parish Cemetery or in a private cemetery that no longer exists.

There are two places that you can look at:

http://jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je/home.html

This is the Jersey Archive index. Click Archive, then name and type in the surname, christian name. This will provide a list of what has been indexed under that name. Click on the persons name and then more info.

However, there are no wills for Sherlock.

The other place available is the PRIDE system (the Public Registry). Sadly this isn't available on-line. You have to view the information at the Archive.
