Slios? Nova Scotia
« on: Friday 30 July 10 09:30 BST (UK) »
Where on earth (well in Nova Scotia) is this?

Some one gave me the following:

' Apparently 2 sons had left home and were living on the Slios in 1871 F1 60 63'
I assume this is a census reference?
All info appreciated

There's a N.S. death registration for a Duncan McKenzie of Kempt Head in 1924- son of Donald and Mary- born 1840 Boulanderie, N.S.
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/

Exactly what is the source for "living on the Slios in 1871"- could it be a mistranscription?

That's him - he is buried at Man O'War Point  as is his wife Jessie,d 1924; daughter Flora d 1957 and a son, Roderick d 1938.  Duncan's parents Donald and Mary (nee MacLellan) are at this time living at Kempt Head (1871 Census of NS E1 34 34) They have 9 children living at home.I get the idea that Slios is an island - the person sending the email refers to  Dan Carmichael's list of families on Slios in 1884.

The reference to Slios is in an email I got froma relative in NS a few years ago, however I have lost touch with her. All my  NS family stuff has been stored away for about 8 years and I am just going through it.

Closest I could find in the area is a Seal Island.

If "2 sons had left home and were living on the Slios in 1871" you could start searching 1871 census for the 'missing' McKenzie sons.

The word Slios appears to be Gaelic. I found some sites that may help you in your search. Boularderie Island would have had a large population of Scot descent that would have spoken gaelic. Even at the start of the First World War, a large number of enlisted personnel that joined the Cape Breton Highlanders and Nova Scotia Highlanders spoke gaelic.
