Thomas Leiper - Born Avondale 1745
« on: Friday 30 July 10 16:18 BST (UK) »
I'm new to this forum so not to sure if I've posted in the right place. ???
I'm looking for any information regarding the family of Thomas Leiper (15 December 1745 – 6 July 1825). He was born in Strathaven and emigrated to America in 1763.  A Scottish American merchant and local politician who served in the American Revolutionary War.  I know he had a brother who also emigrated to America but which brother?  I'd also like to find out more about his parents.  I know his father was also Thomas but who was his mother and what happened to the rest of the family?  I'd really appreciate if someone could help me here.
Many thanks.

Hi and welcome to RootsChat  :)

A number of google sources have Thomas as son of Thomas Leiper and Helen Hamilton. For example:

http://history.rays-place.com/pa/del-ridley-t.htm)
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/LEEPER/2001-03/0984453393

...there are numerous links.

A parent search with parents Thomas Leiper and Helen Hamilton on IGI at www.familysearch.org brings up a number of member submitted entries (which would have to be verified elsewhere) for chidren to this couple, all christenings in Strathaven:

Robert - 02 SEP 1733
Agnes - 02 SEP 1733
James - 05 SEP 1736
Barbara - 13 OCT 1738
Thomas - 15 DEC 1745

Have you checked the OPR on SP to see if it mentions the mother's name?

Looking through the batch code entries on IGI for Avondale (c116212 1698-1785), only fathers' names are showing - must have been the style of the parish entries at this time (which is always a pain!).
