Hawthorn Villas- Kendal

Hi all,

In 1901 i have a John Thomas living at Hawthorn Villas, Kendal- does anyone know where this is/ was? or anything about them?

Hi Gemma,

Hawthorn Villas is a one-off 3-story semi-detached building and the current addresses are nos 11 & 13 Castle Green Lane (the main road out of Kendal towards Sedbergh, under the railway bridge, 100 yards up the hill on the left before you get to Sandylands Road).

There is also a carved stone above the doorways - T&M 1869, presumably the builders.

There is a little bit of information about a J Thomas at that address in the Westmorland Directory for 1938. If this is of interest let me know and I'll post it.

we have him there in 1901 at the villas and obviously now in 1938- but cant find him in otherwise - more searching is needed!!

Hi,

There is a section at the beginning about Westmorland County Council which lists the 15 Aldermen and 46 Councillors. In the list of Aldermen there is "Thomas, J.J., J.P. Hawthorn Villas, Sedbergh Road, Kendal."

In the Kendal section in the list of Private Residents there is the following: "Thomas, John J.P. Hawthorn Villas, Sedbergh Road."

This is from Kelly's Directory of Westmorland, 1938.

I've also found him in Who's Who in Cumberland & Westmorland published in 1937.

He is at the Hawthorn Villas address and described as an Alderman, Kendal Town Council and Westmorland County Council. Quite a number of letters after his name. Thomas, J.J., F.G.S., M.I.M.E., C.C.
