Aaron & Susan SMITH nee LOVERIDGE, North Cottages,Markyate.
« on: Friday 30 July 10 22:47 BST (UK) »
Hi
Is anyone researching the following family, Aaron & Susan Smith, they were married in Markyate in 1894 and in 1901 were living at 118 North Cottages, Markyate, i'm not sure how long they lived there as in 1917 they are at 9 Luton Road, Markyate. I would really like to hear from anyone who might have an interest in this family and also i would like to know if there might be any old photos of the two locations as it would be great to see where they lived.

 Kind Regards

Alright cardiff?

Yeah, it's a bit strange as to why the family moved to Dunstable, then moved back to Markyate :-\.

Hiya,

It looks to me like Aaron was THE general labourer moving from job to job as needs dictate.
Clue? 7 children, all born in "different places".

Interesting family.
Any idea why they waited 11 years after Thomas was born to get married?
Can anyone read what Susan's occupation was in 1901?

ps the 118 (North Cottages) is the census schedule number not the address.

Cheers

Hi

In a nutshell, Aaron and Susan were romany gypsie's, that's the reason why their children were born in different parts of the country, i believe Riley and My grandmother Minnie were born the furthest away, Riley in Ely, Cambs and Minnie in Maidenhead,Berks. Although they were based in the Markyate area they still travelled to do seasonal work.

The marriage wasn't really an issue with gypsies as it was quite common to have their children first then marry later on in life, if i'm correct i think Aaron and Susan had most of their children out of wedlock!!

 Susan's occupation was " Hawker"

I was under the impression that .........118 North Cottages........... was an address!!

Hiya

"118" North Cottages.

If you return to the 1901 census, to the Smith page you will notice that
(RG13/1327 Hertfordshire > Markyate > District 6 > 21)
Col1 is entitled "No of Schedule"
Col2 is entitled "Road, Street, &c, and No or Name of House"
The numerator has properly added the schedule no (118 in this case) then added (part of) the address in Col2.
The enumerator is being helpful, some do not add anything in Col2.

If you browse to the previous page (20) you will see that the previous dwelling is 117, but in HIGH STREET. 116, 115, 114 and so on.
Browse to page 1 you will see that the District 6 schedule starts at 1.
Browse forwards to page 25 and you will see that District 6 ends at 153.
All dwellings uniquely identified with their own schedule number.

Please don't shoot the messenger.

Mind you, we know now that your rellies lived on the corner of High Street.

Might make the foto easier to find.

I'll try "walking" the route of the enumerator (tomorrow) and see if we can pin point which corner.
