Does anyone have information on St. John College? It's where my ancestor John Furlong was an English teacher in the 1871 census.

Hi, i am hoping i am on the right track to trace my great grandfather, John Furlong.  I am wondering if they are the same person.  John Furlong in his later life was a school master and he was married to Elizabeth Ann and they had 5 children, one of them being my grandfather George Furlong.

I found a census that put John at St John College, Luton in his early 20's and am really just hoping its the same person as i dont know anything about my grandfather's side of the family.

I am John Furlong's great-grandaughter.  John's son George Tudor Butler is my grandfather.

How are you related?

Carole

Carole,

Do you have any photos of your Furlong ancestors? I have one of Albert Tudor Butler.

Hi Andy

I dont have anything, other than George's children (one of them being my dad).  I know absolutely nothing of them as my dad and his twin sister Molly grew up in Dr Barnardos from the age of 3½ as their dad was too poorly to look after them.

I would love to see a picture of Albert and especially show it to my dad.

Is our connection through Albert's father John's father?
Carole

Andy you asked about St John's College Luton; I was unable to trace any record of it at the time but have since come across a sales brochure in the local library for when it was being sold on 24th April 1895.  It occupied 3 acres, 1 rood of land between the Old and New Bedford Road in Luton.  Wardown Park (which is also between Old and New Bedford Road) still exists today and will give you an idea of the type of house and grounds similar to St Johns.  It was sold in several lots so I would assume that the college no longer existed after 1895.

Brochure description

A superior residence with 3 reception rooms, five bedrooms and bathroom surrounded by extensive pleasure and vegetable gardens and grounds; the college buildings comprise large school rooms, lavatories, 14 bedrooms for 50 pupils, recreation grounds, playshed, stables, coach houses plus lofts, cowshed and a piggery
