Robert Stevenson certainly shows as father to Rebecca in their 1851 census entry.

Who reported the death of Rebecca for the cert you have?

As Rebecca was an elderly widow, then possibly there was no-one still alive who had known her father, and the informant mistakenly reported Rebecca's father was called Hans.  Likewise with her age.  Do you know who registered the death?  If it was a neighbour or a grandchild, they could have understandably made mistakes like this. If Rebecca had been suffering from dementia or confusion, she could have muddled her grandfather and her father, for example so the informant gave the wrong information.

To check this cert was for your Rebecca, have you looked in earlier censuses to see if there were other Rebecca Moffat's of a similar age living at the same time?

Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester

I have looked for other Rebecca Moffats.  I have also looked for other James Moffat/Rebecca Stevenson marriages, and there is only one.

The informant was their daughter, Elizabeth McLachlan.  My James/Rebecca did have a daughter named Elizabeth Moffat (1830), but I cannot find a record of her marriage.  Since I don't know her husband's first name, I am having difficulty tracking her in the censuses with her married name.  Even if I can find her marriage (if it was after 1855), it would say her parents are Rebecca Stevenson and James Moffat, which I already know.

I hadn't thought of the name being an error.

The father died in 1853 (I think - he died between 1851 and 1855 and there is an OPR death record for a Robert Stevenson in the right area).  This means that Elizabeth would have been 23 and should have known his name.

I am going to look at the OPRs in the family history centre this week and to track Rebecca Stevenson, daughter of Mary McLaren (mother's name) and see what I can find.

He could have been Hans Robert Stevenson or Robert Hans Stevenson.

Is there a nickname of Robert that I am not thinking of that could work with the name on the death cert???

Thank you for all the ideas!

I've never heard of it being used outside Shakespeare, but could it be 'Fleance'?  Name of a Scottish prince in 'Macbeth'.

Thanks everyone!

I did some research and I think the name is Hance (Hans).  If that's the case, then the mother's name is also spelled wrong (Mary McLaren instead of Mary McLellan).

I found a Mary McLellan and a 25 yo Mary Stevenson living with Rebecca/James in 1841.  In the same census, Hans was with William Stevenson.  I found 4 births for Hans Stevenson/Mary McLellan:  William, Margaret, Robert and Mary - this Mary would have been 25 in 1841 (no Rebecca).

So, I think these are her parents or the daughter could have been mistaken and they were a close aunt/uncle.  Who is Robert from the 1851 census?  No idea.  Again, father or uncle.

This death cert has definitely thrown a wrench into my research and given the time period of her lifetime, I don't know if it's solveable.

Thanks for all your help!!!!
