I don't know if it would be possible for you to get to the Hammersmith Archives office ,but they hold Kelly's directories(and electoral rolls) and hopefully you should be able to find your grandma by surname and then cross reference her to the electoral rolls.Not taken during war time of course.

Thanks Carol. I have taken your advice and emailed the Archives office, so am now waiting and hoping that they may have some suggestions. Maybe even better, my mother's mysterious stepfather's name may help provide a clue to when he appeared ion the scene.
Will let you know whether I sigh, or celebrate!

Hammersmith were unable to assist as all the addresses I had verified were not in their area, but they very kindly gave me the correct area for each of the 3 addresses I did have verified. So I've sent off to them and may be, just maybe, I'll be lucky.
