1903 NSW Census
« on: Sunday 01 August 10 21:58 BST (UK) »
I noticed that Gould Genealogy have a CD of the 1903 NSW Census and I wonder is someone who has a copy would be able to look up the census for me please.
I am looking for Thomas Walton and his wife Mary Elizabeth living in the Newcastle area, possibly Wallsend as well as his father Mark Dodds Walton and his wife Mary Ann.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

No Census, but from NSW 1903 Electoral Roll  :D, (not on a CD) noting 1903 roll includes FEMALES for first time, and it was not compulsory to enrol, Males and Females aged 21 and over were eligible to enrol.  As men had been entitled to enrol earlier years, it is possible that they had not updated their exact addresses when the female members of the households enrolled.  I mention this because of differences in the addresses listed below, and several males with same forenames  ;), most likely indicating several family groups  ;).

Newcastle, West Wallsend, all surnamed WALTON, no street addresses, all at West Wallsend except where noted, also the roll is strict alphabetical, so you may need to separate into immediate family groups:
Edward, coal miner;  Edward junior, coal miner; Elizabeth, domestic duties; Ellen, domestic duties; Hannah, domestic duties, (Hannah residing at Holmesville); Mark, coal miner; Mary Ann, domestic duties; Mary Elizabeth, domestic duties (Mary Elizabeth residing at Killingsworth); Mathew, coal miner; Mathew, senior, coal miner; Thomas, coal miner; Thomas, coal miner; Thomas, coal miner; Thomas, coal miner; Thomas junior, coal miner.

Yes, there are four males named Thomas, and also one Thomas "junior".

Hope that helps, perhaps the Sands Directories may have further information,   ;D

Cheers,  JM

Many thanks JM.

I think I can sought out the names. The name Thomas stopped at my generation thankfully.

Thank you Kaz,

These are relations of mine except my grandfather and grandmother had moved by this time to Cooranga North in Queensland, hence my request for the 1903 Census.
I really appreciate your help.

Hello Carmel,
Many thanks for your interest.
My father was Claud Walton the son of Thomas Walton and Mary Elizabeth Henderson.
Thomas (my grandfather) was lucky enough to win in a ballot a closer settlement parcel of land when my father was just 11 years old. That was in 1910. The family moved from West Wallsend at the time, six children plus the parents. From memory they obtained 450 acres of virgin land and farmed that until approximately 1932 when it was sold. "Killarney" was the name of the property and it is currently farmed by Bev, Gorden and Russell Glode. Bev's father purchased "Killarney" in about 1932 from my grandfather ( I can't recall Bev's maiden name).
I have visited "Killarney" a few times over the past few years .
I have a story my father wrote about life at Cooranga Nth and the people involved such as the Stirrups and the Basingthwaits amomgst others.

What was your family name Carmel ?

Nice talking to.
