Where is this in Eskdale?
« on: Monday 02 August 10 17:42 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I found some baptism records for Tyson in Eskdale in the 1820s in which the specific place is stated as Lenkinsen, Eskdale. I can't find Lenkinsen, is the spelling incorrect? Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Brian

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The IGI records several children born to John and Ann Tyson in Eskdale, Jane 1824, Henry 1825, John 1827, William 1829 and Matthew 1830. The first three specifically state Lenkinsen. I don not know Ann's maiden name or where and when she married John Tyson.
The Tysons moved to Ulverston in the early 1830s and had 3 more children. My interest is in William Tyson, born 1829, and his descendants.
Regards,
Brian

Hi Brian

It's probably just me, but where did you see Lenkinsen?  I've looked on IGI and on Hugh Walpole's site, and can't see Lenkinsen.  All I can find is - it looks like it was Ennerdale parish the records came from.  I've never heard of a place sounding anything like that.  I don't live too far away from Eskdale, it doesn't ring any bells.
I'm not much help, sorry :)

Rosemary

Hi
I've looked everywhere Brian via google, and can't find anywhere even resembling Lenkinsen.  Might not mean anything but both entries that mention this place were submitted.  But there's another entrythat mentions Eskdale on IGI,  this one is on film, and taken from books from the chapelry in Eskdale, and Ennerdale.  This one would seem to be more reliable.  Sorry I can't help.

Hi,
Thank you very much for the response and the "looking" I know that there are many Tysons from that area and I will just have to keep plodding on to see if I can find my way through.
Regards,
Brian

Hi

I spent years not far away and still live in Cumbria with parents very keen on local history and I've never heard ofit.

I also searched pastscape and old-maps - see below - with no success.

Best wishes

Emms :)

Could it have been the name of the house/farm they were living in at the time?

Or possibly their accent when pronouncing the place was misinterpreted?
