1881 Census - is it complete?
« on: Monday 02 August 10 19:42 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if the 1881 census for Ibstock is compete?

The family that I am researching are born, live and die there...except in 1881.

Yours very gratefully.

Greeting’s & Welcome. ….Sleepydumpling.

There are several reasons people do not appear in Census returns. :~…..

The Family away on the night of the Census.

The Enumerator did not call at their house. ….

Census return has been damaged. so as not to be able to read it.

Mother away having an other child and Father did not fill the return in.

Father away at War ( 1881 Boar War ) Family farmed out to other dwellings…….

If you post their Names plus ages………
then we can have a go at finding them for you.

MIKE. …….

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your help...the names arent found under general searches so they might well have been lost.

Mother: Eliza Johnson - b. 1843 (widow) - d. 1901 (?)
Elizabeth Ann Hatton - b. 1867 - d.?
Jemima Hatton - b. 1871 - d. 1956

Fantastique! Thank you Jennifer, you star!!   :D

Ancestry didnt come up with that on my searches, but there again, not surprising with the wrong spelling.

I wonder if I could push my luck a bit futher and ask if you could do the same magic for another of my Hatton's. I'm looking for the parents of: John Hatton - B.1814 in Market Bosworth - D. 1876 in Ibstock

John's marriage cert states the father is also called John and that he is a carpenter, and a witness is called William Hatton - but I cant find anything else.

I actually found them quite easily by simply searching for Jemima born Ibstock - I didn't search by surname. I had them within a couple of minutes  ;D

I'll try looking for John Hatton's father later on today - unless someone else jumps in ahead of me  ;D

Thank you Mike and Jennifer.

I really appreciate both your efforts, I'm quite embarrassed to say how long I have been working on these bits (...years). I even visited St. Deny's about 3 or 4 years ago and the Reverend very kindly allowed me to have a rummage through his records (I did write to him in advance to make an appointment).

As you both are clearly so much better than me at these things  ::) ..do you think a marriage certificate/entry exists? and how come there are witnesses for a Banns reading?

Sorry for more questions...
Thanks again

do you think a marriage certificate/entry exists?

This is pre-Civil Registration, so there won't be a certificate. However as Mike has told you, there is a record of the marriage in the Parish Registers.
