British Army on Isle of Man 1800-1861
« on: Saturday 02 April 05 03:47 BST (UK) »
Wondering if the British Army had a base/headquarters/garrison on Isle of Man during the 1800s.

If the army was present on the Isle of Man what records might be available to search for more information re the following ancestor?

G.G.Grandfather Daniel MacCurdy/McCurdy is said to have "come from the Isle of Man".

His army record says he was born in Dublin, 1792, joined 25th Foot, 1807.
He was in the WI (Barbados) "at two different times".  He arrived at Quebec, Canada in June, 1841 from Barbados aboard the Transport Cornwall no.3.  (Was a quarter-Master with 74th Regiment of Foot)
.
Asked for discharge in 1844 'due to debility from long years of services in WI'.

His record states he was a widower by 1844.

He died at Guelph, Ontario, Canada in 1855.

He married Sarah Eliza Allder at St. Michael's Cathedral, Bridgetown, Barbados, Jan. 11, 1816.
We can find no other information regarding Sarah Eliza.

Some of his children claim to have been educated in England.
Isle of Man perhaps?

try www.manxnotebook.com/history/military/regts.htm - however I know of no lists of soldiers for this period other than those in the censuses
any thing with a Manx Connection

Chapter II. "The Island's Contribution to the Fighting Forces" on the Manx Notebook website mentions that there was a small garrison at Castle-town, consisting of half a company, which was withdrawn in 1896.

Hi Maggie,
Sorry, maybe I'm missing something. What's his connection to the Isle of Man exactly?

Here's the deployment of the 25th Foot
http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/025-1.htm

I note that you have that he died in 1855.
I've found this reference to Quartermaster Daniel McCurdy of the 74th being on half-pay with the honorary rank of Captain in 1859  :D
