Orphans and orphanages
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 11:13 BST (UK) »
Hi again people you have been a great help to me this far. My question tonight is. My grandmother born in 1915 in England her name May Olive Joesphine Martin born 6 Nov 1915. She was orphaned some time during her early childhood and removed from the orphanage by a family member once she was old enough to earn her keep. My grandmother gave me this information so I am sure that this is correct. We dont however have a name of the orphanage or its where abouts. All I know is its in England somewhere. I have no idea how I look for this information. I have found all sorts of other stuff but no referance to this.
Thanks in advance

"England" is too big an area and before you can find any information you'll have to narrow down the area greatly. Your previous thread gave more detail about May-
May was born 6 November 1915 in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. Her mothers Maiden Name was Fowler.

I am told that May became an orphan at a young age. She was never adopted though. She lived in the orphanage until old enough to work when apparently a relative got her out to use her to make money.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

It's likely the orphanage would either be local to your grandmother OR have some connection with her family - ie. maybe a charitable institution run for the benefit of families of particular tradesmen etc.
