Dr Matthias Gaunt RN
« on: Thursday 05 August 10 11:19 BST (UK) »
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this - please move if necessary!  Just a bit before WW1!!   ;D

Hi folks,

Matthias Gaunt born 1794 died 1874 trained as Surgeon in Edinburgh I believe - was surgeon in Royal Navy - but seems to be for a limited time.  He was living in London when he married in 1825 and emigrated to Australia in 1831 - so we are wondering - where would we find out about any Naval service, please.   Would he have been serving at Greenwich or on a ship??  He was 31 when he married so maybe Naval service of  about 10 years at most.  He did not practise as a doctor after emigration

Any help gratefully received.

Hi there,

Would this be that marriage for your Surgeon ?

http://www.rootschat.com/links/09mm/

I'm not sure what the UK National Archives holdings include, but they are vast  ;) this link is for part of their index..

Do you know his RN rank and/or have you searched through the Naval Lists ... several of my forebears were RN, serving from late 1700's to mid 1850's.

Hopefully this shrunken link will take you to the The Navy list By Great Britain. Admiralty with names of Physicians, Surgeons and Assistant Surgeons in the Royal Navy from around 1774 to around 1835  the dates for their seniority seem to be included...  Probably best to start at around page 45  ;)

Fingers crossed

Cheers,  JM

Thanks JM - that is his marriage - we have all those details
 - and I spent last night going through naval listings - to no avail so far - have heard this morning that surgeons were often signed on for only a voyage - so that cold make the search more difficult-  but it goes on!!

thanks for the links!  I don't know how you do it - but I spent hours last night and couldn't get these links to bear fruit - they still don't - still can't find him - but at least can see the list of names - a start!!

Hi Wiggy

I've been reading your old posts about Dr Gaunt. Did you find any answers about him being in the Navy, or qualifying as an MD?
