Is Barrow being his actual PoB an assumption on your part?

I have looked back to the 1881 census, and see no combinations of Williams with those occupations linked to Barrow.

In fact if you use the free Index of the 1901 census, there are NO W. Thom* with the occupation of Stone Mason in the area.

The closest I can find in 1901 is a lad born c1881 Lancs, Heywood (Bury area) who has a Father William, but they are both Masons. (and Wm snr was a Mason back in 1881)

I have just been informed by an elderly relative that William senior was from Scotland and thinks William junior was also born in Scotland but doesn't know the location
