COMPLETED 1750 census of Bolnhurst
« on: Thursday 05 August 10 19:54 BST (UK) »
In 1750, the Rev John Jones, Rector of Bolnhurst, made a schedule of heads of households, religious denomination, landlord, & size of household. One of the non-conformists was John Saby, farmer, of Backenhoe, 8 in household. This was taken from the transcription of Keysoe Baptist church book, but it gave only the non-conformist families.

BLARS has advised me that the original census is held at Dr Williams' Library, but they have a photocopy under reference CRT 130 BOL 5.

What I'm hoping to find, apart from John Sabey, is Joseph Sabey, although it's probable that he wasn't a head of household so won't appear (he was a servant in Bolnhurst when he married in 1751)

If anyone is going anywhere near Blars in the next couple of weeks I'd be very grateful for a look up for any Sabeys in this census. I'm going to crack this family if it kills me!

Many thanks in advance

David

Good morning

That 1750 census is mentioned on the Genuki site, plus there is a communicants list also in Dr William's library.

I'm back working 5 days a week so I don't know when I'm next visiting the Archives... although I am off on Wed 25th after returning from Carcassonne, you'll have to wait.

By the way have you seen the will of John Sabey of Blacknoe House dated 1781

Got to go .... John

Good moaning John

There's no rush!

Yes, the 1781 John Sabey will was one that I checked when we were at BLARS. It mentions sons James and William and daughter Sarah. No Francis though, which is where everyone's line stops

See you soon

David, There were not too many people residing in Bolnhurst in 1750 - just enough to fill a page of A3 paper, & yes it has John Saby as you described but not a Joseph Sab(e)y or any other Sabeys; perhaps he was one of the 8 people recorded as living in his household; which wasn't his household as the landlord was John Lawson & the rent was £45.00 .

The inhabitants were grouped as follows ::-
Farmers
Robert Wyat, John Smith, George Freshwater, James Ashburner, William Goodley. John Saby. John Wells, John Church, Samuel Maxey, John Wadsworth, John Wadmore, Thomas Fendham
Cottagers
William Crafts, William Cunningham, Gyles Smith, Thomas Elms. William Fodery, John  Peck, William Milton, John Northfield, Henry Saunders, Richard Keely, Robert Wakefield, William Braubrook, William Dawson, John Carter, Nenjamin Squire, Thomas Lewis, Robert Saunders, John Bennington, William Feary.
Eleemolyaries
Edward Jackson, Wid Berry, Wid Feary, Wid Beal, Eliz Crafts, John Stokes, Mary Hall, Mary Hemmington, Anne Hardwick.
Outdwellers
Owen Goodchild (Little Staughton), Joseph Marshall (Pertenhall), Franklin, esq (Gt Barford), James Fuller (Tillick), Henry Shadbolt (Keysoe), John Skinfield (Thurleigh)
Omitted
Thomas Spencer, Wid Wyatt, William Goodman, Thomas Horton.

Found this marriage at Wilden today, next to Thomas Mayes....

29 Mar 1740 John Saby of Blacknoe House, husbandman to Elizabeth Hull of Thurleigh. Licence from Mr Lamb of St Pauls Bedford.

You may have it already - cheers John

Brilliant! Thanks very much John. I had the marriage from the IGI but wasn't totally sure he was the John who was producing unbaptised children in Bolnhurst. It's great to have confirmation. All I've got to do now is find where he was from - there was a John baptised in Colmworth in 1716, but I suspect that one was the John who started baptising children in Northill in 1739.

One day I'm going to crack these Bolnworth Sabeys - every brick removed from this wall that everyone talks about helps!

Why does someone from Bolnhurst marry someone from Thurleigh at Wilden? Perhaps his non-conformity had something to do with it
