Clara Bertha Cox in Toronto
« on: Friday 06 August 10 11:56 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Looking for Clara Cox known as Bertha.  She was born in Durham, England  abt 1886 but was put into a Childrens's Home at a fairly young age.

She emigrated to Canada with the "Home Children" to Niagara on the Lake in 1903 and the last know whereabouts was as a domestic with a Mrs Bruce Harman in Toronto in June of that year.  Not been able to find her in 1911 census yet.

She travelled on the SS Baveria on or about March 1903 and then to "Our Western Home".  She was by now either 16 or 18 years old and was obviously found a position as a domestic with Mrs Harman.

Would love to find out if she married or had any children.  Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Martha

http://genforum.genealogy.com/canada/messages/90052.html
 - somewhere here says she was b. 17th May 1885.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html
shows a 1911 death for Ruth Gagnon, stillborn, parents "Telmeau" Gagnon and Bertha Cox, and Telmon Gagnon's death in 1928.

At http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ there is a Bertha Gagnon, b. May 1886 England (listed as emigrated 1900, though), married to Telman (indexed as "T?") Gagnon.

He signed up for WWI as Telman Gagnon.

If you can find the marriage or death of this Bertha that might clear up whether she's the right one.

Bertha C. Cox (Ballentyne) buried in Brant was probably Bertha Ballentyne who was married to Louis Cox (they were in Brant in 1927 - there's a death of a child of theirs there).

On the cemetery finding aids people are always listed by the name they were buried under, any name in () will usually be the maiden name.

In one of the links posted by Jorose parents were Albert Cox and Annie Mitchell.  It would work out if Albert had a second name of William as Polar Bear is probably referring to the marriage of May 10, 1909 at Toronto York between Edward Gagnon, 27, bricklayer, living in Toronto, s/o E. Gagnon, doctor and Elman Cox to Bertha Cox (indexed as Berth A.) 23, living in Toronto d/o Wm Cox.  Witnesses were Lee Gagnon and Mrs. B. R. Park with Mrs. Park most likely the wife of the officiant A. R. Park.

On the 1928 death certificate for Telmon Gagnon his father is given as Eli Gagnon and the address is 3 Brock Crescent Toronto.  He is buried Prospect Cemetery Toronto.  His birth was in Ottawa.

There is a birth recorded for May 14, 1876 for J. Telmon Gagnon at Basilique Notre Dame Ottawa with parents E. Gagnon and O. Puissant.  Ancestry has mistakenly recorded it under 1829.

If you emailed the Toronto Public Library and used their Ask a Librarian service you could ask for a Directory lookup for 1929 and any other year you wanted in order to find out if Bertha is listed in the Toronto directory as widow

Thanks everyone.   Great information.  Her father was Albert William Cox, and I am in contact with the person in the link from Jorose - thank you.

Thanks Debbie for the further info on Telmon Gagnon - this connection is looking more promising.
