Dorah Anne Wood
« on: Friday 06 August 10 19:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a marriage cert for Dorah Anne WOOD m. Ralph BURN.  Both 'of full age' married 28th June 1855 at St Hilda's, South Shields. Parents: Ralph BURN/Ralph WOOD.  Both were of full age:(

I'm trying to find out when Dorah Anne was born and when she died, as her husband Ralph BURN remarried on 18/2/1865.

Any clues as to where to look would really be appreciated.

Cheers,

Trini.

Hi Carole,

Yes, I have tried FreeBMD, but with deaths, who knows what name was given?  I can't see anything.

I'm posting this for an elderly friend (not pc literate) but he seems to have come to a standstill.  I can't find much on Dorah, yet the Marriage certificate does say Dorah Anne Wood.  He wants to try to find a birth and death for her.

(The Ralph Burn side of the family is ok. - all Ralph Burn's in his tree, were Pilots on the River Tyne.)

Thanks for your help.

South Shields is actually in Durham, being on the south bank of the river, but I won't move your post just yet as we really need an 1861 census look up to see what they give as place of birth.  What children did they have?  Can't see them as a couple just yet.  Does his next marriage certificate give his age?

Sorry Andrea,

Such a lot of mine were married at St Hilda's in South Shields and yet lived in North Shields, I forgot where I was posting.

I haven't got his next marriage certificate but details are that he was alive 1828-1895.

Probably need to move this to Durham board.....:)

Knowing that they are pilots helps a bit but in 1861 the only sensible aged Ralph Burn is still living with his parents.  He is shown as married but there is no wife with him.  RG9 3785 28 50
They are in South Shields, 11 Lawes Cottages Beacon Street Westoe.

Hi Andrea,

Yes, I saw that one, too.  Probably him, but where is the wife, and what name did she go by?  Can't yet find her.

Thanks,

Trini.

Hi Trini

Is she Dorothy Ann Wood and Dorah was a nickname?

There is a Dorothy Ann Wood christened at Monk Wearmouth, Durham on 25 December 1835, daughter of Ralph and Dorothy.  I think 20 would have been full age in 1855 ???  Dorothy Ann is with Ralph on the 1851 being born at Longbenton which is not too far from South Shields.

What was Ralph Wood's occupation on the daughter's marriage certificate? a coal miner by any chance?

There are 2 Dorothy Burn's dying in that area around that time - 1853 in Morpeth and 1854 in Newcastle but also a Dorothy Ann Burn dying in 1858 in Morpeth so that could be your lady.  Her dying would fit with the lack of wife on the 1861 census that Andrea posted.

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for your reply.

On the marriage cert, Dorah's Dad was a Farmer.
