Surnames/Origins
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 21:54 BST (UK) »
In the past I am sure I saw a site on here, I believe it was a University project.  It was giving the origins of names but I have been unable to find it in Links and Resources. I have tried a few smaller sites, i.e. Google  but none seem to have "Eveness".  Thank you for any help.  Lookin2

I think you're probably referring to the Spatial Literacy project, now on the National Trust website:

Thank you for your response.  I don't think that was the one as the one I remember gave % of where your name is now in use by country.  I tried Eveness on it though and it came up negative.Lookin2

Lookin2, have you tried searching for varients of the name ?   A century ago, not many could read or write, so their names were written down as they were heard.   Yours is a little tricky, because there's at least two ways of pronouncing it, but I would try it with an H in front, or maybe with an R in front of the N, i.e. "Everness".

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Hi

There are always a few on censuses so it is really a matter of tracking your line back to where it stops (made much more difficult if that is London) and then searching around for possible similarly spelt surnames which might give an indication of the spelling change if there was one.

Have you now got further than your great grandmother? What details do you hold on her?

I rec'd B. cert for Elizabeth Frances and was surprised to see that the surname was spelt with, what I call, an old fashioned way of spelling the s with what looks like an f.
It is difficult to make it out as it looks like a dot above the s or an n,and could go like this Evesiefs or Evinefs. Obviously the Registrar had trouble with it.

I found the Surname site I was looking for it was The World Profiler and they only had UK with an 0.7 for Evesness.

IGI has Evesness listed and there are a few scattered around i.e. Gloucester so will keep on tracking to see what comes of it.  Lookin2
