Jewish Marriage 1884
« on: Sunday 08 August 10 19:05 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
I wonder if any kind person would be able to give me a helping nudge on where to look for a marriage that took place in 1884 Newington ( may come under Kent or Surrey ) possibly a Jewish one as I haven't a clue where to look.  ???
Any help most appreciated. :) I have looked in the Newington Parish Register but nothing was showing.

By 1884, it should appear in the GRO indices whatever the religious persuasion.

You can check the GRO indexes yourself on Freebmd for nothing.  If you haven't found the marriage how do you know it took place in Newington?

Hi

If you found the banns then they weren't Jewish

The fact that banns were called doesn't mean the wedding took place though.

Why did you think they might be Jewish?

My husband's great-grandmother was Jewish and married a gentile, but they married at the Strand Register Office.  Perhaps there was some doubt about marrying in church.

Or perhaps for whatever reason the marriage didn't take place.  Were either of the couple under age?  Maybe their parents refused to consent.

Well the facts are that they had Banns read in two different parishes, but I think you may have hit the nail on the head, Quote - Maybe their parents refused to consent. I think is one that we will never know sadly.
RE Jewish, it was always thought throughout the family, no more than that.  :)
