Capt Ralph R Shorto,RN
« on: Monday 09 August 10 02:38 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of Ralph Russell Shorto.
DOB: 23 May 1908 Place: Portsmouth
We know a little about his naval career, and the fact he was awarded
the "Distinguished Service Cross" in june of 1940, following the 2nd Battle of Narvik.
We also know he died 22 NOV 1956 and was buried in Naples, Italy while still actively serving in the Royal Navy.
We also found a 4 line obit referring to his mother as Mrs. H.R. Shorto of Recife, Brazil.
We have not been able to locate any other information.
Can anyone help me locate his parents???
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Cheers from Australia

With luck this is his brother Wilfred and maybe their father...

UK Incoming Passenger List
Southampton England July 1938
"Arlanza"

SHORTO Henry Ralph Trenchard aged 63 Merchant Last address Brazil
Address in England ...  Royal Bank of Canada 6 Lothbury London

SHORTO Wilfred Russell aged 28 Merchant Last address Brazil Address in England..... Bank of London and America 6 Tokenhouse Yard London

Looks as though both of these men travelled back and forward from Brazil to England.  One voyage in1935 gives their depature address as Recife.  Not finding Henry and Helen travelling together however.

Henry Ralph Trenchard Shorto was my great-uncle, the brother of my grand-mother, Maud Shorto, who died in Vancouver, Canada in 1949. She emigrated to Canada in 1913 and married Alex Seymour in Alberta. She had two daughters, Margaret and Dorothy Seymour. I was aware members of the Shorto family moved to Brazil but had no details as to what happened to that side of the family. I had been told that Capt Ralph Shorto had served on HMS Rodney during World War II.
