Married ... or not!
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 11:11 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Apologies if this is the incorrect part of the forum.

I cannot locate a marriage for my GreatGrandparents.  I contacted the SDFHS and they performed a search which bought up no information.  They suggested they *might* have been non-conformists and that I should contact the areas concerned, Chard, Brighton, London, Cambridge and ask for them to do a search of the non-conformist registers.

My query is, if they WERE non-conformists, surely their marriage would stillbe registered under the BMD of this country wouldn't it?

Next question is, I believe I've found the correct birth entry (1885) for their first child.  If I went ahead and purchased this certificate would the entry for the Mother's name be registered as her UNMARRIED name or would it be assumed that they were married??  Don't want to throw money away unnecessarily!

Many thanks in advance,

Flora-Mae

Firstly, yes, wherever they married be it Church of any denomination or Register Office, then there should be a record in the GRO index.

Secondly, the details on the Birth cert of the child will be whatever the person rgistering the birth said. So if it was the mother who registered and she said she was Mrs Bloggs nee Smith then that is what is would say. If she said she was Miss Smith, then likewise.

Do you want to give us the names, and all details you have (1891 census if you have it) and we can have a look around for the elusive marriage (or of course they may not have married)

Hi, thank you for such a quick reply!  Would it also state the mothers maiden name if she gave her married name please?

I'd be very grateful if you could do a search, but I'm not holding my breath.  I've been looking almost 3 years and found nought.

This is what I have for the 1891 census::

HEAD:   Hancock Francis age 26  born Cambridge
WIFE:   Hancock  Helen  age 30  born Chard, Somerset
SON:     Hancock  Francis  age 5  born  St.Pancras
DAU:     Hancock  Eleanor  age 3  born  St.Pancras
SON:     Hancock  Charles  age 1   born Barnsbury

At this point, I'll add there is a verrry strange thing re the mothers first name.  I have reliable documents to show she used THREE names:  Ellen, Helen and Orpha.  I think ELLEN ORPHA was her name as appears on the birth register though.

Many thanks

Yes, I have this much Carol.  I know what happened to 2 of the other kids, Eleanor went into service, Charles (my Grandfather) went into an 'Orphanage' in west London, but no idea what happened to son Francis.
